Potter Becomes Limb Bark Art Sculpture(tm) Artist

While thinning out Althea bushes, aka Rose of Sharon, in the back yard I realized I could make contemporary sculptures by stripping the bark into small strings and use the wet and pliable wood in any way I wanted. I spent that evening creating my first sculpture called Fishing. Since I am an avid fisherman and a master angler I thought it would only be appropriate to create something in that theme. After that I was hooked. I started to make more and more sculptures from an artist’s point of view. I let my work dry outside by placing it on my backyard fence. There were thunderstorms and Kansas wind to contend with. I found out that the true sculptor was Mother Nature herself. She would enhance my work in a variety of ways. She would take some parts off. Would use her sun to reshape and others she left as is.

Working with this media is so similar to clay. With both you can tear things apart, soak them in water and start over again. You can re-soak these natural products and start fresh. Rather than using a drying shelf and bisque kiln you simply put your sculpture outside so the Earth, Fire, Water and Wind can be the true sculptor. Drying time depends upon the humidity and amount of sunlight. With ceramics you glaze in many colors. While with Limb Bark Art Sculpture(tm) the color of the bark controls the outcome. When a glazed piece of bisque ware is fired in a glazing kiln you never know what the resulting piece will look like. This is similar to the final drying time that I allow for, which is normally three months. The results are fantastic.

The difference between Medias is where the end work will be displayed. Limb Bark Art Sculpture(tm) is not intended to be placed on a shelf inside a home. It would rather be outside or hanging in a foyer, both at home or in the office place, or being displayed in a public place. It has individualism and wants to be exhibited as such. I have, however, found that taking black and white prints of the original work fits well on that inside shelf and looks beautiful hanging on any wall in your home. Photography now plays a role in Limb Bark Art Sculpture(tm). For those who have a love for painting, Limb Bark Art Sculpture(tm) makes a perfect canvas. And even those craft lovers can use it as the structure for those items they like to make crafts out of. The use is endless. Who would have guessed that by doing a little garden maintenance would be the start of a new Media that can also be integrated with many Medias. My garage (aka personal gallery space) is being taken over by large plants while the pottery sits quietly underneath it.
